Meet the Artist: Kaedin Teel
When did you start drawing?
I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember, but I started drawing comics in elementary school with my friends.
What are your favorite things to draw?
I really enjoy drawing people. Experimenting with poses, facial expressions, lighting, clothing, and more – in order to represent a feeling or to describe a scene; without the use of words, is something I’ve always had fun with, and I’m always seeking to get better at.
Who are some of your artistic inspirations?
I get inspiration from all over the creative spectrum, but if I had to narrow it down to a few people, I would go with Hirohiko Araki, Herbie Hancock, and Derek Yu.
* Hirohiko Araki is a Manga artist from Japan, who made the popular, active-running series Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. I’ve been a huge fan of his work for a long time. His art-style, character development, situational creativity, originality, and story progression, is something I look towards as a point of reference for what’s good.
* Derek Yu is an indie game developer, who in my opinion, is and example of perfected craft. His content is something that I’ve consistently enjoyed for over a decade. He has enough content in his games to keep it exciting and new, without anything being too much or too little – the perfect amount to enjoy. Aside from that, his games have a great way of implied story telling, based on your surroundings, that give you an idea of what has happened, without actually saying much. Not to mention he has a great art-style that fits perfectly for what he makes. His mastery of quality with the perfect amount of quantity, is something that I look to achieving and translating into other mediums of art.
*Herbie Hancock is an American Jazz artist, who is always testing and experimenting the boundaries of music, and still finds a way to make it sound great. He’s gone through many phases of music in the past 62 years, but keeps a signature sound that you can always recognize. But what really keeps me listening, is that his music always creates vivid pictures and story lines in my mind, sort of like someone telling you a story without words, and I find that incredible.
Any projects you’re working on or looking forward to working on?
As of now, a lot of the content I make now are just fun side projects that I work on when I have time; but in the future, I plan on making higher quality, consistent pieces, such as a running graphic novel series, and even some albums Jazz albums I would like to make with some friends of mine, so keep an eye out!
