A word from the editor…

When Okie Comics began almost a decade ago, the goal was to capture as many different genres as we could to showcase the talent we have in all kinds of storytelling. We had Archie-style teen comics with The Couch Kids, nonfiction about rose rocks, sci-fi, heartwarming tales, comic strips, and talking animals in Zooklahoma. The obvious addition is, of course, a SUPERHERO!

The question was: what kind of powers would this superhero have? Weather-manipulation was the obvious choice, but with Marvel’s Thor flying around after New Asgard hovered over Broxton near the Wichitas back in 2007, I wanted something different. Asking myself, “What is Oklahoma known for?” brought the answers of wheat, cattle, oil and natural gas, red dirt, all that, as a kid who grew up on a farm north of Enid would say. “Maybe something with the iron? No, that’s Magneto.” So what if someone had telekinesis like Magneto but over organic matter? Now we’re exploring!

The name “The Oklahuman” came from the term for someone from Oklahoma and inspiration from Matt Price’s Posthuman Project. Add Michael Kennedy’s dynamic art, and we can see something a little different than we’ve seen before.
